Hours after
fellow HyeFighter and friend Arthur Abraham
scored a decisive 10th round knockout in
Berlin, Germany, undefeated junior
middleweight HyeFighter Vanes Martirosyan
(25-0, 16KO) cruised in what was supposed to
be the biggest test of his career. The 2004
US Olympian hit Andrey Tsurkan (26-5, 17KO)
with every punch in the book before the
fight was stopped after six violently
one-sided rounds.
There were no
knockdowns in the fight, although
Martirosyan had him badly hurt in the
fourth, and progressively grew more vicious
in his attack in the subsequent rounds.
Swelling around Tsurkan’s left eye is
ultimately what led to the stoppage,
although the insane amount of punishment he
absorbed was every bit as qualifying.
Martirosyan’s
stock has never been higher. There have been
rumblings of 2009 becoming his breakout
year, and the Glendale (CA)-based junior
middleweight is well on his way. The win was
already the third of the year for the
23-year old, with a possible Boxing After
Dark showcase on tape later this year or in
early 2010.

Arthur Abraham
TKO's Turkish Fighter Oral
HyeFighter
Arthur Abraham (30-0, 24 KOs) retained his IBF
middleweight title with a thrilling tenth-round
technical knockout over German-based Turk Mahir
Oral (25-2-2, 7 KOs).
The opening round was pretty calm as both
fighters were focused and cautious trying not to
take any punches and using their jabs to feel
the space between each other. Abraham connected
with a hard left to take the first stanza
closely. Surprisingly, the WBA #7, IBF #11 and
WBO #13 ranked Oral started to take the fight
over in the second round. Oral was successful in
taking the champion out of his defensive shell,
scoring several times with the huge left and
right hooks, when ‘King’ Arthur was opening up.
Round two was all Oral’s and he also took the
first two minutes of the third before being
involved in a two-way exchange at the end of the
stanza, which saw Abraham being a bit luckier
with his huge blows. The fight seemed to be
heading in a rough direction for the reigning
champion, when Oral started the fourth round as
confident as the previous two. But during the
third minute of the fourth Abraham suddenly
exploded with a huge multipunch combination,
which forced Oral to lose his composure, shook
him up and sent him into a hard knock-down after
a thunderous right by the champion. Oral stood
up on shaky legs and was lucky to survive till
the ending bell of the round.
While the fight seemed about over, Oral dug deep
and found some inner reserves in him to recover
during a hard fifth round and even to land some
bombs at the end of it. Round six saw his
confidence growing up again but when the Turkish
fighter was seemingly gaining his earlier
composure, Abraham connected with a huge
downright right hand that sent Oral down for the
second time in the bout. ‘Lion” Oral was able to
last till the end of the round again. Round
seven was a time off for ‘King’ Arthur as he
spent the whole stanza trying to find a weak
spot in Oral’s unsteady defense but landed zero
power punches. He began to operate with his
usual frequency in the eighth; his punches
easily penetrating his opponent’s block thanks
to their enormous power. Round nine was once
again huge for the champion who was all over the
challenger. Finally, Oral took a knee at the
very beginning of the tenth after another of
Abraham’s furious assaults. The challenger
bravely stood up only to go down two more times
after body shots by Arthur Abraham. The fight
was waved off at 1:23 of the tenth round, when
Oral’s corner threw in the towel after the third
knockdown. Abraham’s tenth successful title
defense in a thrilling two-way action.

Artyom Hohannisyan &
Gabriel Dolmajyan Score
Impressive Victories!!!
What an amazing turnout and an absolute great
night for professional boxing in Glendale.
Both HyeFighters won impressive victories and
the event was attended by a large contingent of
HyeFighters who showed up to support their
brothers and the event. It was very
gratifying and uplifting to see Manny
Gamburyan, Edmond Tarverdyan, Vanes Martirosyan,
Georgi Karakhanyan, Roman Mitichyan, Ando Dermenjyan and Vacho
Avagyan supporting and even cornering the two
HyeFighters, Artyom Hovhannisyan and Gapo
Dolmajyan. And, a special thanks to Kahren
Harutyunyan, of Art Of Boxing Promotions and
Steve Bash of Bash Boxing for putting this event
together.
HyeFighter
Hovhannisyan, who trains at Glendale Fighting
Club, handily won every round entering the sixth
and final round. Referee Raul Caiz, Jr. put a
halt to the bout 21 seconds into the round when
Gonzalez left himself unprotected from a
crushing left from Hovhannisyan. Gonzalez
took heavy damage in the third round when
Hovhannisyan (8-0-1, 3 KOs) scored a knockdown
on a punch that split Gonzalez’s lower lip open.
By the end of the round, Gonzalez also had a cut
above his right eye and considerable swelling on
his left. “I was very surprised [with how
much punishment Gonzalez took],” Hovhanneisyan’s
trainer Edmond Tarverdyan said. “He’s got a very
good chin. “I’m happy with [Hovhannisyan’s]
performance.”
Gapo “The Ghost”
Dolmajyan, who also trains at the Glendale
Fighting Club, improved to 6-1 (1 KO) with a win
by majority decision in four rounds over Hugo
Ramos (2-1-1, 1 KO) in a super featherweight
contest. Dolmajyan, a southpaw, displayed quick
hand work and repeatedly scored with a punishing
left to the torso, all while fending off
occasional wild salvos from Ramos.

HyeFighter Manny
Gamburyan WINS in His
WEC Debut
HyeFighter Manny
Gamburyan, the former UFC fighter making his
World Extreme Cagefighting debut, won what we
know will be the first fight on his path to
taking on the Faber-Brown winner down the road.
Gamburyan, fighting at 145 pounds after fighting
at 155 pounds in all five of his UFC fights,
beat John Franchi by unanimous decision (30-27
on all three judges' cards) in a fight that
established him as a featherweight to watch.
"This is my new home, guys," Gamburyan said
afterward, via Ariel Helwani at Versus. "I'm
only going to get better. That's all I can say.
I'm only going to get better. The last time I
cut to 145 was exactly 10 years ago, so this
wasn't easy for me, trust me ... 20 pounds for
me was very hard."
Gamburyan, who also
said after the fight that he may have suffered a
broken hand in the first round (which was later
confirmed to HyeFighters.com that there is no
break), said that he expects to fight the Faber
vs. Brown 2 winner some day. "That's what
I'm here for," Gamburyan said. "It's all about
getting that belt around my waist. I think if I
follow the right path, I can do it." We
are certain that with a few more times he'll get
that chance, but Gamburyan took the first step
Sunday night in Sacramento.

Gegard Mousasi makes time for fellow HyeFighters - JUNE
4th
HyeFighter
Gegard Mousasi visits LA
and makes time for fellow HyeFighters!!!
I am sure that to
those of you who follow MMA, are aware of the
fact that Gegard Mousasi (Geghart Movsesyan) was
in Los Angeles this week on June 4th & 5th for
the August 1st Affliction Trilogy announcement
and press conference. After six years in MMA,
HyeFighter Gegard Mousasi is finally getting the
respect he deserves. The 25-2-1 fighter is
currently riding a 12-fight winning streak with
his next bout is the co-main event at
"Affliction: Trilogy" against Renato "Babalu"
Sobral in Anaheim CA. A win over "Babalu" in his
first fight in the United States will certainly
confirm his status as one of the best fighters
in the world. What a lot of you may not be
aware of, is the fact that Gegard was extremely
generous and took time from his busy schedule to
meet with us and fellow HyeFighterts. We
picked him up from his hotel near LAX and met up
with small group at of fans and HyeFighters at a
local Armenian restaurant in Glendale CA.
Among some of the notable HyeFighters
were, Gokor Chivichyan, Edmond Tarverdyan,
Kahren Harutyunyan, Hovhannisyan, Gapo
Dolmajyan, Karen Darabedyan and Roman Mitichyan.
Gegard was very friendly and open to everyone
there and we all appreciated his candor.

Before taking Gegard
back to his hotel room, we made a quick stop at
Gokor Chivichyan's gym, where Gokor, Roman and
Gegard spent some time demonstrating and
practicing some submission moves. The
entire night was perfect and Gegard left an
absolute positive impression on everyone there.
He transformed his fans and fellow HyeFighters
into friends an earned everyone's respect.
All of us who attended would like to thank
Gegard and let him know the Armenian community
in Los Angeles considers him as a brother and we
will be at his fight on August 1st, in droves,
cheering him on to victory on his 24th
birthday!!!

GAMBURYAN's WEC DEBUT - JUNE 7th
WEC 41 Preview:
HyeFighter Manny Gamburyan vs John Franchi
HyeFighter
Manny Gamburyan will finally make his
long-awaited WEC debut, after almost two years
in the UFC, against undefeated featherweight
John Franchi. Gamburyan will be attempting to
put a stop to his opponent's win streak.
Franchi (5-0) was successful in his WEC debut
back in March with a razor-thin close split
decision over Mike Budnik.
“The Anvil,” as he is known to “The Ultimate
Fighter 5” fans, is going on a decade in his MMA
career. He has seen some stiff competition, even
before his UFC days, as evidence of his wins
over Jorge Santiago (KO – 2003) and Sam Morgan
(Decision – 2004) and has had close
contests with the likes of Sean Sherk (Decision – 2001).
In 2007 Gamburyan was chosen to compete as a
lightweight on “The Ultimate Fighter: Season 5.”
He made it through until the show finale in June
’07 when he was unable to continue against Nate Diaz when he
injured his shoulder early in the 2nd round. He
was so impressive that he received invitations to
four more UFC fights. He recorded UFC wins over
Nate Mohr and Jeff Cox.
John Franchi is a 26 year-old Team Bombsquad
member that began his MMA career less than two
years ago after an amateur kick-boxing and
boxing stint. He built a 3-0 record fighting for
small organizations such as Extreme Fighting
International, Full Force Productions, and World
Championship Fighting.
The now-defunct IFL was the next pit-stop for
Franchi who took little time in submitting Frank
Latina with a rear naked choke at
“IFL-Connecticut” in May ’08. Four stoppage wins
in four fights earned him a five-fight deal with
the WEC, where he went back and forth with Mike
Budnik for three rounds before finally being
rewarded with a split decision win.
We feel strongly
that Manny will win this contest in a dominant
fashion as he has told us he is in the best
shape of his life and feels very strong.
Good luck Manny!!!
