EL MONTE — In dominant fashion, the rise of two up-and-coming Glendale-based fighters continued late Thursday night.
Sako “The Chainsaw” Chivitchyan ripped through Frank Baldival, and Ando Dermenjyan beat the clock to beat Andrew Patlan, as both secured first-round tapouts via rear-naked choke at a California Xtreme Fighting card in the El Monte Expo Center.
“We planned to take [their opponents] down and finish them and we did,” said Romik Kalantaryan, who cornered both fighters and trains them both at Glendale’s Main Event Gym. “I’m very happy. [It went] just the way we planned. Exactly.”
Chivitchyan, a Glendale resident, fought in the second-to-last bout of the nine-fight card and continued a comeback that saw him return to mixed martial arts after a more-than five-year layoff on a Jan. 29 CXF card when he defeated Noe Rodriguez via technical knockout in the third round. Chivitchyan admitted to being a bit rusty in that fight, but looked far from it on Thursday.
At the onset, Chivitchyan (3-0) brushed off a few Baldival (0-2) kicks, secured a body lock and quickly secured a takedown. Baldival worked hard to shake Chivitchyan, but the Armenian fighter, whose fight began with a huge “Sako!” chant from a strong gathering of fans, would have none of it. Chivitchyan continued to ride Baldival until gaining his back. The latter rolled and rolled, but eventually Chivitchyan sunk in the rear-naked choke, leading to the tapout submission just 1:28 into the first round.
“We’re gonna see some more of him [with] better fights,” Kalantaryan said.
In the third fight of the night, Dermenjyan (2-0) got a similar result, choking out Patlan (0-2) in 2:59 of the opening round.
“I’m happy,” Dermenjyan said. “I won, I can’t complain.”
Dermenjyan shot in almost immediately, beginning a bout in which the combatants were never both on their feet for more than a moment.
“[It] was a wrestling match for Ando and he did a great job,” Kalantaryan said. “Not many are gonna beat him at wrestling.”
Patlan stuffed the shot at first, but a dogged Dermenjyan eventually worked the take down. Patlan’s guard also proved sufficient early.
“He was better than I thought on the ground,” Dermenjyan said.
Dermenjyan picked up Patlan far enough to generate a slam, but moments later, Patlan secured a slam of his own, which was later followed by another takedown.
Patlan got Dermenjyan’s back, but was too high to sink in a choke. The fight remained in that position for a while, with Dermenjyan making his opponent work to keep it there before eventually pulling him down, gaining top control and raining down three hard right hands.
“I just wanted to tire him out, that’s why I kept pushing him up,” Dermenjyan said. “Once I felt him get tired, that’s when I went for position.
“The first punch landed and I felt him go kind of limp.”
The blows led to Patlan turning on his stomach and giving up his back, which Dermenjyan gladly took, eventually sinking in a rear-naked choke for the second first-round tapout of his burgeoning career.
“I guess I got him hurt [with the punches] and he turned and gave me his back,” Dermenjyan said. “Thank God, I think I got him with one second left.”
Indeed he did, as CXF rounds are only three minutes.
It seems as though there’s a lot left for Dermenjyan, though.
“There’s always room to improve,” he said. “I’m gonna get back in the gym and train hard.”

HyeFighter Kentikian dominates Bout!
Germany -- Unbeaten HyeFighter WIBF/WBA female flyweight world champion Susi “Killer Queen” Kentikian (24-0, 16 KOs) scored a one-sided ten round unanimous decision over highly regarded contender Elena “Baby Doll” Reid (19-5-6, 5 KOs) on Friday night at the Sporthalle Hamburg in Hamburg, Germany. Reid, who fought two close fights with female ring legend Regina Halmich in 2004 and 2005, was never in this one as the big-punching champion Kentikian was too fast and too aggressive, wading in and delivering punishment throughout. Although outgunned, the game ‘Baby Doll’ bravely battled to the end, but there was no question whose hand would be raised. Scores were 100-90, 100-90, 100-91.

HyeFighter Darchinyan vs Agbeko
set for summer!
HyeFighter Junior bantamweight champion Vic Darchinyan has always had lofty goals. One was to win the flyweight title. He did that and reigned for almost three years.
Another goal he set for himself was to win the junior bantamweight title. He did that, too, winning a belt last summer and then unifying the three major belts in spectacular fashion when he knocked out Cristian Mijares in the ninth round in November.
But after brutalizing Jorge Arce for 11 rounds in February, he wanted another challenge. So now it is on to the bantamweight division for the trash-talking Australian slugger.
Darchinyan will move up in weight and challenge bantamweight titleholder -- and fellow power puncher -- Joseph "King Kong" Agbeko this summer, Darchinyan promoter Gary Shaw told ESPN.com on Thursday.
Shaw said he made a deal with Agbeko promoter Don King for the bout, which will take place at a site to be determined this summer, most likely in June. Showtime will televise in the United States, Shaw said.
"The fight is made. That's breaking news," said Shaw, adding that he was awaiting official approval from the IBF, which recognizes Darchinyan as its 115-pound champion and Agbeko as its 118-pound titleholder. "It will be on Showtime and be a co-promotion between Don and myself."
Shaw said he has a deal with Showtime for the fight but the network had not yet assigned a specific date because it is working out its summer schedule.
Darchinyan (32-1-1, 26 KOs), 33, an Armenian living in Australia, has emerged as one of the top fighters in the world, becoming the first three-belt champion in junior bantamweight history. But he has always said he'd like to move up and win a bantamweight title and eventually a junior featherweight title.
Shaw believes he can do it, but doesn't want him to get ahead of himself.
"This is a very tough fight," Shaw said. "We have a lot of respect for the 'King.'
The question is, will Vic bring his power up to bantamweight with him? I hope so."
Agbeko (26-1, 22 KOs), 28, of Ghana but based in New York, stopped Luis Perez in the seventh round in September 2007 to win his belt. After a long layoff, caused in part because Agbeko came down with malaria, he made his first defense against mandatory challenger William Gonzalez in December and scored a majority decision victory in a sensational action fight.
The match with Darchinyan is just the sort of high-profile fight Agbeko has wanted, manager Vinny Scolpino said.
"It's definitely a good fight, a great fight," Scolpino told ESPN.com. "It's not signed yet, but everything is good. We want it. When the paper comes in front of us, it should be signed off on without a problem. I think Joseph has a great chance to win. Darchinyan is a tough guy and he can punch, but so can Joseph. So I think we have a great chance. Besides that, it's an awesome fight. It's a true fight. Nobody knows who's going to win."

HyeFighter Abraham Retains His Title!
KIEL, Germany -- HyeFighter Arthur Abraham retained his IBF middleweight title with an easy unanimous decision over overmatched Lajuan Simon on Saturday night.
The talented Armenian champion fighting out of Germany pounded the American challenger from the opening bell, although Abraham never managed to deliver a knockout blow to the previously unbeaten Simon.
The judges scored it 117-110 (twice) and 118-09 for Abraham, who hopes to land a unification bout with recognized champion Kelly Pavlik, the holder of the WBO and WBC belts who has plans to defend against Sergio Mora later this summer.
"After that I will move into the super-middleweight division," Abraham said.
Abraham traditionally has trouble making the middleweight limit, and needed to lose 15 pounds in the 10 days before the fight.
"I am pleased with my performance tonight," Abraham said. "He was not a bad opponent and he took a lot and he fought bravely. It was important to win."
Simon lost for the first time in 25 fights. He also has two draws.
"He was stronger than I thought," Simon said. "It was an interesting experience. I will be back."

Boxing Ban
OVERTURNED in Glendale!!!
Boxers get back in
ring
Promoter will have
to provide extra security and pay for five
police units at June fight.
By Jason Wells

CITY HALL — In the
match of Kahren Harutyunyan versus Glendale’s
prohibition on professional boxing, it was the
local promoter who emerged victorious Tuesday
night after the City Council pledged to lift the
62-year-old ban for a one-year trial period at
the Civic Auditorium.
Harutyunyan, a
champion boxer and owner of Glendale-based Art
of Boxing Promotions, had been lobbying the
council to allow pro-fighting matches in a city
that has produced numerous champions.
On Tuesday, four
City Council members said they would vote to
approve the one-year trial period next week, but
warned that they would be watching the first
fight — tentatively scheduled for June 12 — for
any hint of negative impact to the city.
“I’m hoping
everything will be OK, but I’ll be watching it
like a hawk,” Councilman Bob Yousefian said.
Professional
fighting was banned in 1947 after the City
Council, under pressure from residents who said
the form of entertainment was “unwholesome,”
denied a request to hold a boxing match in the
city.
Dave Weaver was the
only member of the council to disapprove of the
most recent request, saying he was
“philosophically uncomfortable” with
professional fights.
Still, he did not
dispute the contention of proponents who said
the ban was short-changing the ability of local
fighters, and their young trainees, to fight in
front of local fans.
“I know my city’s
changing; it’s not the city I grew up in,”
Weaver said.
City officials,
under pressure from the council to take as many
precautions as possible to ensure a smooth
event, reviewed a litany of conditions included
in the proposed contract.
Harutyunyan’s
promotion company would have to supply eight
door monitors and four private security guards,
and cover the cost of five Glendale Police
units, including a canine and a fire marshal.
So far, the event is
planned to be smoke-free, and beer and wine
sales will end at 9 p.m., one hour before the
end of the last match, according to the
proposal.
Traffic officials
would also direct motorists leaving the event
away from a nearby residential neighborhood and
to the major road arteries out of the city, such
as the nearby Glendale (2) Freeway.
Capacity for the
event would be capped at 1,100 people — a
relatively modest size for the Civic Auditorium,
city officials said.
And at a time when
the city is putting pressure on departments to
increase revenues, the event is expected to
bring in a net profit of roughly $9,000.
Despite the precautions, there were a couple of
residents who protested temporarily lifting the
ban for a sport they considered to be “barbaric”
and nefarious. Frequent City Hall speaker Evelyn
Hansen even called pro boxing “a huge step back
in social advancement.” But the
majority of the council was not dissuaded from
granting at least tentative support for the
one-year trial period and the sure-to-be closely
watched test fight in June.
Councilman Ara
Najarian cited the violence wrought on hockey
and football players each year as proof that
sanctioned battering has its place in the sports
arena.
“We’re talking about
two trained individuals,” he said. “Boxing is
much more controlled.” The June fight,
which is scheduled to feature several local
boxers, has already been sanctioned by the
California Athletics Commission, which requires
a host of on-site restrictions and testing,
including background checks. Fighters must
also get a CAT-scan prior to the event, and the
on-site doctor has the authority to shut the
fight down, city officials said. The
council also sought assurances that, should the
June fight go awry, the ban would fall back into
place. The ordinance introduced Tuesday gives
the city manager broad discretion in reviewing
applications to hold matches at the auditorium.
“I’m happy that we’re moving in the right
direction,” Councilman Frank Quintero said.
While the ordinance,
together with a proposal to allow the June
fight, is scheduled to come back to the council
for a full vote next week, it was clear at the
meeting Tuesday that Harutyunyan would have the
necessary support. “I’m impressed that
[Harutyunyan] has jumped through considerable
hoops to make this happen,” Mayor John Drayman
said.
After the hearing,
there were high-fives and plenty of
congratulations outside the City Council
Chamber. But there was also a sense of earnest
in putting on the first major city-sanctioned
professional fight in 62 years. “It does
put on a little pressure, but it’s just another
milestone in my promotional career,” Harutyunyan
said.

Abraham Targets Pavlik
HyeFighter
IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham is willing to defend his IBF title against WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik anywhere in the world to prove he is the best in the division, according to his agent Kalle Sauerland. Abraham’s next fight is against Lajuan Simon on March 14. Sauerland told Setanta Sports News that Pavlik was the only fight Abraham wanted. “We’ve been after this fight for a long time and there definitely hasn’t been any offer to come to Germany,” he said. “We put an offer to Top Rank [Pavlik’s promoters] and they seem to be hesitant, but I think in the past 48 hours we’re starting to make roads forward. This match up will show who the best middleweight in the world is. We understand that Kelly’s a big name in the States, but Arthur’s a big name in Germany. All we want is for this fight to happen. We’ll go to his backyard and fight him if necessary.”

Homecoming for HyeFighter
Vanes Martirosyan
After a one-year stay in Houston, Texas, Vanes “The Nightmare” Martirosyan (23-0, 14 KOs) has made his return back home to Glendale, CA. Vanes is excited to re-unite with his former trainer Freddie Roach, and ready to start training again at The WildCard Boxing Club in Hollywood, CA. “It saddens me to leave Ronnie Shields and Houston after a very productive one year run, but my team and I made a tough decision and believe this change will be best for my career at this time” said Martirosyan. “I cannot thank Ronnie, Brian Caldwell, and Creed Fountain and the rest of the guys at Savannah Gym enough for the many hours they put in with me and for all that I learned during my time there. I would also like to take time to thank Dr. Albrik Nazarian for being a great friend and mentor during my stay in Houston. I do look forward to a fresh start here with Freddie Roach - who I began my pro career with, and can’t wait to get in the gym. This is a very big year for me and I’m now more than ever determined to take it to that next level and make some noise at 154.”

After a
disappointing split decision loss to Thiago
Tavares at UFC 94, “The Ultimate Fighter” 5
runner-up Manny Gamburyan confirmed his drop
to the featherweight division from his
previous home at lightweight. I don’t
know if the cut is going to be hard or easy
– I haven’t made 145 in almost 10 years –
but I’m going to do it in a good way,” he
told MMAWeekly.com on Wednesday. “I’m going
to put together a beautiful training
(camp).”
Last summer,
Gamburyan said UFC co-owners Frank and
Lorenzo Fertitta wanted him to make the leap
to the WEC’s marquee division after taking
on Rob Emerson at UFC 87. But Gamburyan
lost, and revised the plan. He would defeat
Tavares, challenge two fighters he felt he
had unfinished business with (likely Nate
Diaz and Sean Sherk), and cut the weight.
The decision to move the 27-year-old
HyeFighter was made shortly after the Jan.
31 fight against Tavares.
Gamburyan plans
on fighting as a lightweight again, but
there are plenty of opportunities in the WEC.
“There are a lot of good guys at 145 also,”
he said. “Mike Brown, Leonard Garcia, Urijah
Faber, Jens Pulver. But I think my ability
to drop to 145 – I’m going to be a lot
stronger, and quicker. At 155, my technique
is my advantage, because the day I’m
fighting, I’m 160, 162. The guys are
outweighing me by at least 20 pounds every
fight, so I don’t think that’s fair.”
Gamburyan does not have a date for his WEC
debut, but expects to fight in May or June,
depending on the promotion’s schedule. “I’ve
never been this excited in my life,” he
said.
