Karo Murat
Defends his belt - Wins via TKO
In a rematch, European super middleweight champion & HyeFighter Karo Murat (19-0, 12 KOs) scored a tenth round TKO over former WBC super middleweight titlist Cristian Sanavia (40-5-1, 12 KOs). Murat was deducted a point in round one for a low blow, but also punished Sanavia over the early rounds. The rugged former world champion continued to apply pressure, but Murat was extremely sharp and connected with hard, clean punches throughout the fight. The bout was finally stopped between rounds nine and ten. Official time was :05 of round ten. Murat had won a close decision over Sanavia to win the Euro belt last April. This time the result was clear and impressive.

Abraham Targets Pavlik
HyeFighter
IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham is willing to defend his IBF title against WBC/WBO middleweight champion Kelly Pavlik anywhere in the world to prove he is the best in the division, according to his agent Kalle Sauerland. Abraham’s next fight is against Lajuan Simon on March 14. Sauerland told Setanta Sports News that Pavlik was the only fight Abraham wanted. “We’ve been after this fight for a long time and there definitely hasn’t been any offer to come to Germany,” he said. “We put an offer to Top Rank [Pavlik’s promoters] and they seem to be hesitant, but I think in the past 48 hours we’re starting to make roads forward. This match up will show who the best middleweight in the world is. We understand that Kelly’s a big name in the States, but Arthur’s a big name in Germany. All we want is for this fight to happen. We’ll go to his backyard and fight him if necessary.”

Homecoming for HyeFighter
Vanes Martirosyan
After a one-year stay in Houston, Texas, Vanes “The Nightmare” Martirosyan (23-0, 14 KOs) has made his return back home to Glendale, CA. Vanes is excited to re-unite with his former trainer Freddie Roach, and ready to start training again at The WildCard Boxing Club in Hollywood, CA. “It saddens me to leave Ronnie Shields and Houston after a very productive one year run, but my team and I made a tough decision and believe this change will be best for my career at this time” said Martirosyan. “I cannot thank Ronnie, Brian Caldwell, and Creed Fountain and the rest of the guys at Savannah Gym enough for the many hours they put in with me and for all that I learned during my time there. I would also like to take time to thank Dr. Albrik Nazarian for being a great friend and mentor during my stay in Houston. I do look forward to a fresh start here with Freddie Roach - who I began my pro career with, and can’t wait to get in the gym. This is a very big year for me and I’m now more than ever determined to take it to that next level and make some noise at 154.”

Gennady Martirosyan
WINS by KO
HyeFighter
Russian middleweight champion Gennady
Martirosyan, 29, is steadily raising his
stock as a legitimate contender in 160lb
weight division. On Friday night, Feb. 20th,
Martirosyan (16-1, 6 KOs), who is ranked #15
by the WBO, added a vacant PABA
middleweight title to his resume and
Thai Kiatchai Singwancha (26-6, 16 KOs) to
the list of victims with an impressive
ninth-round knockout victory. The fight was
a headliner of a packed tournament, held in
Casino Conti, St. Petersburg, and promoted
by Vitaly Supichenko and Alexander Yagupov
of Jab Promotions.

Both fighters started the bout cautiously
trying to avoid unnecessary mistakes and
operating according to their pre-fight
plans. Southpaw Singwancha sought an
opportunity to land his counter left, while
Martirosyan used lateral movement and ruses
to make the Thai foe miss. In round three,
Singwancha adopted another tactics by going
forward and attacking in spurts but to no
success. As rounds went by, heavily-built
Martirosyan started to gain more and more
confidence with each minute. He was cutting
his opponent’s movements and pummeling him
in the corners, taking little in return. In
round nine, the local hero finally increased
tempo and began landing at will. After
another of Gennady’s three-punch combos
Singwancha was down and out for a count and
was unable to get on his feet for a few
distressing minutes. Time was 1:18. By the
time of stoppage all three judges had
Martirosyan well ahead with lopsided scores:
80-72 and 80-73 (twice). |

Manny Gamburyan
Joins WEC FEATHERWEIGHTS
Wednesday,
February 18, 2009 - by Tom Hamlin -
MMAWeekly.com
After a
disappointing split decision loss to Thiago
Tavares at UFC 94, “The Ultimate Fighter” 5
runner-up Manny Gamburyan confirmed his drop
to the featherweight division from his
previous home at lightweight. I don’t
know if the cut is going to be hard or easy
– I haven’t made 145 in almost 10 years –
but I’m going to do it in a good way,” he
told MMAWeekly.com on Wednesday. “I’m going
to put together a beautiful training
(camp).”
Last summer,
Gamburyan said UFC co-owners Frank and
Lorenzo Fertitta wanted him to make the leap
to the WEC’s marquee division after taking
on Rob Emerson at UFC 87. But Gamburyan
lost, and revised the plan. He would defeat
Tavares, challenge two fighters he felt he
had unfinished business with (likely Nate
Diaz and Sean Sherk), and cut the weight.
The decision to move the 27-year-old
HyeFighter was made shortly after the Jan.
31 fight against Tavares.
Gamburyan plans
on fighting as a lightweight again, but
there are plenty of opportunities in the WEC.
“There are a lot of good guys at 145 also,”
he said. “Mike Brown, Leonard Garcia, Urijah
Faber, Jens Pulver. But I think my ability
to drop to 145 – I’m going to be a lot
stronger, and quicker. At 155, my technique
is my advantage, because the day I’m
fighting, I’m 160, 162. The guys are
outweighing me by at least 20 pounds every
fight, so I don’t think that’s fair.”
Gamburyan does not have a date for his WEC
debut, but expects to fight in May or June,
depending on the promotion’s schedule. “I’ve
never been this excited in my life,” he
said. |

In
a super flyweight superfight, IBF, WBC and
WBA unified champion HyeFighter Vic
Darchinyan (32-1-1, 26 KOs) scored a
punishing eleventh round TKO over WBA
interim champ Jorge Arce (51-5-1, 39 KOs) on
Saturday night at the Honda Center in
Anaheim, Calif. Darchinyan had a big first
round rocking Arce with big bombs.
Darchinyan continued to punish Arce in round
two. Arce turned things around in round
three, landing some shots that bloodied
Darchinyan. Good action in the fourth, Arce
was rocked in the last minute. The rounds
continued to be competitive with an edge to
Darchinyan. Arce was wobbled in round seven.
Round eight was one-sided for the champion
as Arce was clearly wearing down. Darchinyan
opened a cut over Arce’s right eye in the
eleventh as Arce continued to take a
beating. The doctor stopped the bout after
the eleventh. Scores were 109-100 on all
cards. “He surprised me. I didn’t expect a
fight from him like this,” said Darchinyan
afterward. “He was tough. He is a good
fighter. I hit him with some good shots, but
he kept coming back. I would have liked to
knock him out cold, but this is OK. I am
happy. I feel great. Maybe if it goes
another round, I knock him out. Arce hit me
with some good shots, but I was too strong.
I think my speed was a difference.
I am ready to fight anybody!”

Junior
Middleweight HyeFighter Vanes Martirosyan
(23-0, 14 KOs) remained unbeaten with a
workmanlike eight round unanimous decision
victory over Billy Lyell. All three judges
scored the bout for Martirosyan, 79-73,
78-74, and 80-72. The former US Olympian
controlled most of the action, but Lyell
came to fight and was able to land counter
shots to the head. Lyell’s face at the end
of the fight was reddened by the amount of
punches he took. It was learned after the
fight that Martirosyan may have fractured
his left hand in the first round of the
fight. |

Sevak Magakian
and Karen Darabedyan WIN!!!
GLENDALE — As
Glendale mixed-martial arts fighters Sevak
Magakian and Karen Darabedyan attempt to
navigate their ways to MMA stardom, it’s
clear the grapplers are fast building a
reputation that, as the old adage goes,
they’ll fight at anytime, anywhere.

On Friday
February 6th, at the Quiet Cannon in
Montebello, both HyeFighters Darabedyan and
Magakian continued their recent winning
ways, as both took their respective fights
on short notice and prevailed.
Magakian won his fifth straight fight, all
of them coming via first-round submission,
as he forced opponent Evan DeLong to submit
via heel hook in just 23 seconds. Darabedyan
fought later in the card and notched a
decision win over Tony Ferguson.
“I’m happy with the decision, but ... I
think I can do a lot better than what I
showed,” said Darabedyan (6-1), who’s won
four consecutive fights. “The win is always
good, but you want to get the good wins.”
Magakian’s win fell into that category, as
DeLong (5-3) attempted a kick that was
caught by the Glendale resident and led to a
quick takedown and the subsequent
submission. It was the second win for
Magakian (6-2) in a span of just nine days.
Magakian, who defeated Daniel Mancha in 2:05
on Jan. 29 in El Monte, had only two days’
notice, according to him, before his fight
in Montebello. “That’s why I fought, because
I didn’t fight much in the other fight. I
was just ready to go,” said Magakian, who
was on the offensive for his entire fight
against Mancha. “I took the [DeLong] fight
right away.”
Darabedyan’s no
stranger to short-notice fights either, as
he had roughly two weeks to prepare for his
bout on Friday and it came after a Jan. 25
defeat of Saad Awad in Los Angeles via
decision. Darabedyan had three days’ notice
for that fight. For Darabedyan, who, like
Magakian, fights between 160-170 pounds, the
toughest part is making weight with just a
few days to get in shape.
“Just cutting
weight is a big-time problem,” said
Darabedyan, whose defeat of Ferguson (1-1)
was the fourth of his career by decision.
“I’m really out of shape right now, I’m just
taking the fights because they’re coming.”
As for what’s coming next, the two good
friends who train primarily at Glendale’s
Main Event Gym and Hayastan Grappling are
just hoping for more wins en route to a
bigger stage. “We don’t want to jump ahead
of ourselves,” Darabedyan said. “We’re on a
good path right now.”

Vic Darchinyan talks about
his Fight on the 7th of February

VIC DARCHINYAN
“I am anxious, focused and confident. My
weight is great. I am ready to go.
“I expect this is going to be a good fight.
I’m not looking to knock him out in the
first round. He is a tough fighter and I
know he is here to give me a tough fight. So
this might go a couple rounds.
“But once I hit him – and before he realizes
what hit him – the fight will be over.
“I got a lot of attention when I was
undefeated, but the recognition is more now
that I beat Mijares like a baby. Being
undisputed champion means more.
“I know I have a target on my back and that
everyone will be gunning for me. That’s why
I am not overlooking any opponent, including
Arce.
“Arce has done a lot of talking, but I like
it when they talk and think they are going
to beat me. That way, when it is over, I can
remind them of what they said while I am
holding the belts.
“I’ve been chasing, following this guy
around Mexico for three years. I can’t wait
for Saturday.” |

Mixed Martial
Arts: Mitichyan upset in KO loss, but fellow
HyeFighters all finish with wins.
By Grant Gordon - From the Glendale News
Press
EL MONTE — On a
night of fights filled with local
highlights, as Glendale-trained HyeFighters
Sevak Magakian, Ando Dermenjyan and Sako
Chivitchyan were all impressive in victory,
it was the main event that left area mixed
martial arts fans stunned — and frightened.
Making his mixed
martial arts return after a near 10-month
hiatus, Glendale’s Roman “The Emperor”
Mitichyan was on the receiving end of a
brutal knockout loss against Jason Meaders
in the finale of a California Xtreme
Fighting card at the El Monte Expo Center
late Thurday night. Meaders (5-7)
landed consecutive right hooks coming out of
the clinch that led to the stunning upset
and led to Mitichyan (9-3) falling backwards
unconscious onto the mat 2 minutes and 41
seconds into the third and final round.
Mitichyan, who protested being fitted with a
neck brace, was stretchered out of the ring
and taken by ambulance to USC Medical Center
late Thursday night. He was released early
Friday morning. “He’s fine,” said
George Bastrmajyan, Mitichyan’s manager and
cutman. “It was just precautionary stuff.”
Prior to the
main event, Dermenjyan, Chivitchyan and
Magakian all looked impressive. All three
finished their fights, with Chivitchyan
securing a technical knockout and Magakian
and Dermenjyan winning via submission in
front of a boisterous throng of Armenian
fans that took up at least half of the
audience. “I’m very happy with the crowd,”
Dermenjyan said. “I really appreciate them
coming out to support us.”
Dermenjyan was the first of the four
fighters to compete on Thursday. All of them
train at both the Glendale Fighting Club and
the Main Event Gym in Glendale, among other
gyms. Dermenjyan made his pro debut and
promptly choked out Miles Howard (0-2) in
1:45 of the first round of their lightweight
(155 pounds) bout. After circling each
other for a while, Dermenjyan shot in and
eventually secured a takedown with a leg
trip. Howard showcased a solid guard, but
Dermenjyan eventually moved into position to
lock in a guillotine choke from the top and
secured the tapout. “I’m very happy with the
way things went,” Dermenjyan, 24, said. “I
had [the choke in] tight. The guy just
didn’t even budge.” The crowd erupted with
the win and Dermenjyan dropped to his knees
and buried his face in his palms, rejoicing
in the moment. “I was waiting for this
opportunity a long time,” he said. “You play
it over in your mind, but once it happens,
it’s like reality hit you. It’s the greatest
feeling in the world, you can’t describe
it.”
While
Dermenjyan was making his debut, Chivitchyan
(2-0) was fighting for the first time in
roughly six years when he faced Noe
Rodriguez (0-1) in a welterweight tilt.
It showed in the first two rounds, rounds
won by Chivitchyan securing takedowns and
working some punches and elbows from the
top. Still, it was hardly anything
enthralling. That changed in a flash in the
third round. Chivitchyan, who looked
hesitant in the first six minutes to let his
hands go, landed consecutive right crosses
that sent Rodriguez to the mat. Chivitchyan
pounced and finished the fight 14 seconds
into the third with a barrage of hammer
fists, leading to the TKO stoppage. “I had the
little butterflies,” said Chivitchyan, 24,
of fighting after the long layoff. “After
exchanging some blows, it felt good.
“The first two rounds, I was a little
rusty.” In those first two rounds, though,
Chivitchyan had scored with some leg kicks,
resulting in Rodriguez changing his stance
to that of a southpaw. “His chin was
closer to me,” he said. “I just threw the
right.” And with it came renewed promise and
desire to keep his MMA career flourishing.
“This basically gave me the confidence and
motivation to train harder,” the Glendale
resident said. “It just motivates me to a
new start. I just want to improve every
fight.”
Magakian
ended his welterweight fight against late
replacement Daniel Mancha (1-3) just 2:05
into the first round. Magakian (5-2),
who also lives in Glendale, dazzled the
crowd with no less than three textbook judo
throws that had Mancha, landing flush on his
back. “I was controlling all the time, he
couldn’t do anything,” Magakian said.
“Everytime when I fight, I have one or two
judo throws.” Magakian’s first
takedown was along the lines of a textbook
football tackle, though. He immediately went
for an armbar, but the fighters got tangled
in the ropes, aiding Mancha in scrambling to
his feet. That began a sequence that carried
out with the judo throws, the last setting
up a kimura armlock that led to the tap.
“He was a strong guy, but I came up
stronger,” Magakian, 23, said. “I just
wanted to do what I’m best at.” Indeed
that’s submissions, as the rising star has
won all of his fights by submission.
Mitichyan,
a two-time Ultimate Fighting Championship
veteran, was making his debut at 160 pounds,
having fought previously at the 170-pound
welterweight class. Known for his takedowns
and submissions, Mitichyan surprised many at
ringside by engaging Meaders, who had three
previous knockout wins and two prior
submission losses, in a stand-up fight.
Going into the third round, the ringside
judges, which included well-known MMA
referee “Big” John McCarthy, and fighting
legend “Judo” Gene LeBell, had the fight
even at a round apiece. The News-Press had
scored the first round for Meaders and the
second for Mitichyan. Both men went
down in the first round, but they were
caused by slips, although Mitichyan
connected with a right high on Meaders head
before the latter tripped back to the
canvas. Mitichyan ended the round with a
bloodied mouth. The two went back and
forth in the second. Mitichyan, 30,
appeared to be staggered a bit at the
beginning of the third round, but kept
motioning for Meaders to keep coming, to
which he obliged. Toward the end of the
round, Mitichyan went for a takedown and the
two struggled in the corner, but once more
Mitichyan initiated separation, going for an
elbow. But Meaders, a southpaw, beat him to
the punch with a staggering right hook that
sent Mitichyan back. It was followed by a
second that knocked him out. “He got
caught,” Bastrmajyan said. “If you fight
long enough, it happens to everybody.”
Bastrmajyan said Mitichyan was
understandably “bummed” and disappointed by
the loss.
As for
Chivitchyan, Dermenjyan and Magakian,
though, if Thursday was any indication, the
future looks very bright.

World Champion
Vic Darchinyan Ready to KO Arce!!!
WBA/IBF/WBC
super flyweight champion Vic Darchinyan
(31-1-1, 25 KOs) is confident of knocking
out Jorge Arce (51-4-1, 39 KOs) on February
7th at The Pond, Anaheim, California and
also has a warning for Arce’s manager
Fernando Beltran. “I am upset with Beltran -
the manager of Arce… He should keep his
mouth shut and let Arce and myself do the
talking. After I knockout Arce I will go to
his corner and thank him for fighting me but
then I might knock out Fernando Beltran. I
plan on punishing Arce and will show him who
is the better puncher and boxer.”
As for the future? “After I defeat Arce I
would like to fight the winner of the
Montiel vs Donaire WBO title bout. I think
Montiel will knockout Donaire but I am very
confident I can defeat both of them.
“Another big fight I am after is to fight
Israel Vasquez. I first boxed Vasquez at
Freddie Roach’s gym in 2004 before I won the
IBF flyweight title from Irene Pacheco.
Again in 2007 we boxed again in the gym - he
gave me great sparring but I am confident I
will defeat him if we fight.
“2009 is the Year Of The Bull,” he
concluded. “I am the Raging Bull!”
In 2008 Darchinyan scored his best win when
he stopped Cristian Mijares in nine rounds
to win the WBA and WBC titles. Jorge Arce
was soundly defeated over twelve rounds by
Cristian Mijares in 2007.
